Good industrial design is engineering made legible. For more than a decade, Rune Balle Design has collaborated with companies in the renewable gas and CO₂ infrastructure sector, transforming complex mechanical systems into products that are safe to operate, efficient to manufacture and built for demanding industrial environments.

The work spans compressor stations, refueling systems for heavy-duty CNG vehicles and transfer equipment for liquefied CO₂. Every project starts with a thorough understanding of the existing technology before progressing through sketching, 3D CAD, prototyping and testing in close collaboration with the client’s engineers.

By systematically designing out manual operations, products become simpler to manufacture, more cost-effective and competitive to produce in Denmark—without compromising performance, quality or environmental responsibility.

NORDKAP by regaco — renewable gas compressor stations

NORDKAP is a purpose-built compressor station enclosure designed for the Scandinavian climate — hard engineering in a soft shell.

Unlike compressor plants housed in converted shipping containers, NORDKAP is built from corrosion-resistant materials on a prefabricated foundation using insulated sandwich panels with rounded corners. The enclosure provides ample space for all maintenance and service to be carried out indoors, protecting both technicians and equipment from the weather.

The concept is highly adaptable. More than 20 plants have been delivered in sizes ranging from 18 to 45 m², as stand-alone units, coupled installations and shared buildings. Each plant is fully prefabricated at the factory, minimizing installation and commissioning time on site.

SHEREX by Regaco — CNG refueling

The SHEREX range is a family of products developed in close collaboration with Regaco for the renewable gas and CCUS sectors. The range includes equipment for heavy-duty CNG refueling.

A consistent design language unites the product family: clean sheet-metal geometry, corrosion-resistant materials and intuitive operation in demanding outdoor environments. Each product was developed through sketches, CAD, full-scale prototypes and extensive user testing before entering production.

Testimonial

“We have worked with Rune Balle Design for more than ten years. Together we have designed our NORDKAP concept for compressor stations, SHERFILL-CNG and SHERHOSE-CNG for heavy-duty gas refueling stations, and SHERHOSE-CO₂ and SHERPARK-CO₂ for CO₂ transfer systems in connection with us.

The design processes have been efficient and highly productive. Rune always ensures thorough registration and measurement before we begin, so we can work with the design in. Add to that, cardboard models, hand sketches where Rune works with the ideas, continuing to 3D CAD (Solid Works) 2D documentation and renderings – and 3D print models that we test intensively before putting the products into production.

It is a pleasure to work closely with Rune. We are good at keeping each other on track, so we make full use of our production processes — primarily laser cutting and bending. We avoid manual operations wherever possible, and together we have developed a strong design that meets customer and environmental requirements and can be manufactured in Denmark at a competitive price.”
