Hotbeds for the Royal Kitchen Garden at Gråsten Palace

In the summer of 2020, the Royal Kitchen Garden at Gråsten Palace was officially inaugurated by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II and Princess Benedikte.

Juliana Greenhouses designed and manufactured 100 custom hotbeds, more than half of which are used to extend the growing season across the garden’s many planting beds. The hotbeds were designed by Bjørn + Balle, while the royal sisters played an active role in shaping their final appearance.

To date, nine hotbeds have been installed in the kitchen garden, with the remaining units introduced the following spring. The other half of the production will be used at additional historic properties managed by the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces.

Beyond serving as a new attraction in Southern Jutland, the Royal Kitchen Garden also functions as part of a social rehabilitation programme, offering meaningful activities for vulnerable citizens in the Sønderborg area.

The Royal Kitchen Garden is well worth a visit – and admission is free.
